Not surprisingly, even nine months out, you captured the Bar Mitzvah with pitch perfect retrospection; no one could have possibly saw/said it better! And of course there’s also only one person who could have expressed the pride and love you were feeling or done it with the sensitivity and empathy you articulated.

There’s one other dimension to Jake’s Bar Mitzvah…one other perspective that I’d like to submit, certainly not for your blog which is yours alone, but for “the record,” for posterity to note and for history to record.

Standing at the Torah as he did, reciting ancient texts in an ancient, but no longer arcane language, Jake not only did himself and his loved ones proud, he not only stood there as the newest man of the oldest People, he stood in the footsteps of 100 million Jewish men before him, including two great grandfathers …each of them a Jack or Jacob.

Tradition has it that as a Son of the Commandment, Jake is now obligated to join his co-religionists in Tikun Olam, repairing the world. I think the role models you & Lisa have provided for him make fulfilling that commandment a lock!

Eddie Darling,
We were there for Jake, it's true. But we were equally there for Lilly, Lisa and you. You are such a beautiful family and we are so very lucky to know you and to have been a part of Jake's day.
It truly was one of the most beautiful experiences of our lives.
It was also a helluva fun, delicious, dance crazy good time!
So happy you were able to finally find the way to completing this chapter of the story...especially with another one now in the works...
We look forward to Summer 2013 and Lilly's Batmitzvah!
Big Love and Besos,
Rose, Andy and Nina

I liked your article, especially the part about Lily and Jake's first kiss. The love of my life is 3 years old (going on 13). But I know that all too soon it'll come to an end. Intellectually I think I'm ready to face that. Just not yet. I still get mad when we're out and she says hi to people who don't say it back.

Lovely... just lovely.
Reminds me of what the minister said at my grandmothers funeral. Grief is like a river. Sometimes you dip your toe in, and sometimes you fall in and are pulled under. It is our friends and family (and beautiful children) who keep pulling us back to the riverbank.

Wow....so Jake has the Levine Gift. Lisa is King, I am Queen & I married the Duke of Knowing All Songs. Cool. My son has also received the Gift.
And, our home may be the source of that song. I am somewhat proud to say that Ray & I, on any given moment, launch into that refrain: "Everybody was Kung-Fu Fighting, Everybody was Fast as Lightning"...not sure why or how that started, but there really isn't a day that goes by when one of us (now all 4 kids as well) can sing those 2 lines.
Additionally, we sing, "Hong Kong Fuey - Number One Superstar"....not sure why.
